Is the Slurp MD convert tool free?
Yes. The convert tool is free for everyone, with no signup, no credit card, no tier limits. Convert files up to 256MB, batch up to 50 at a time, all clean modes available.
Can I use the Slurp MD convert output with ChatGPT or Claude?
Yes, that is exactly what it is built for. Markdown is the most token-efficient format for AI assistants. The output preserves headers, lists, tables, and structure so the model can reason over your document accurately.
Are my files private?
PDFs are processed entirely in your browser using PDF.js, so they never reach our server. Other formats are uploaded to api.slurp.md, converted in memory, returned, and immediately deleted. We do not retain or read your files.
What document formats are supported?
PDF, Word (DOCX/DOC), Excel (XLSX/XLS), PowerPoint (PPTX/PPT), EPUB, HTML, CSV, JSON, XML, plain text, SRT subtitles, ZIP archives, and OCR for images (JPG/PNG/WebP). 25+ formats in total.
Is there an API?
Yes. The same engine is available at api.slurp.md (legacy api.smarkdown.xyz still resolves). Free, rate-limited per IP. Documentation is on the way; in the meantime, the source is on GitHub.
How is this different from CloudConvert or Smallpdf?
Three things: (1) free with no upsell, (2) Smart Clean Mode for messy spreadsheet exports (QuickBooks, Xero) that other tools do not handle, and (3) PDFs are processed in your browser so the file never leaves your device.
